AFTER spending the last seven days in custody, a 20-year-old Mandurah man was released on Tuesday with a “substantial amount” of fines.
Jason Douglas John Simms pleaded guilty in the Mandurah Magistrates Court last week to five charges relating to an incident on Burley Street on September 12 where his car collided with a tree.
Simms failed to provide police with details of the accident and recorded a blood alcohol reading of .136.
His vehicle was unregistered at the time of the incident and Simms was not the holder of a valid licence.
Magistrate Terence McIntyre said previous warnings had failed to curb Simms’ offending behaviour and placing him in custody was meant to send a “clear message” to other people who disregard road rules.
Appearing on Tuesday, counsel for Simms said his client had had a “flavour” of what he faced if he was to be sent back to prison.
Magistrate McIntyre said Simms would be returned to custody if he drove again in a reckless manner with alcohol in his system.
Simms was released and ordered to pay fines totalling more than $1800.
He was disqualified from driving for a further 18 months.
