Personal bests the order of the day

THE Mandurah Swimming Club hosted the Frasers Landing Mandurah Junior Short Course meet last weekend which attracted 162 swimmers aged 12 years and under from 18 clubs.

Forty seven junior members of the Mandurah club competed, some of whom were competing for the first time.

While medals and records were highly prized each swimmer’s main aim was to produce a new personal best time, which is not always easy given the amount of energy required to push themselves over their previous time.

In an outstanding effort the 47 Mandurah juniors managed to claim 134 personal best times between them.

Among the many noticeable personal bests achieved on the day were nine-year-old Dylan Ansell who produced a 10.40 second PB time in his 50m breaststroke and an 8.67 PB in the 50m freestyle event.

Michael Triffett, 11, produced a massive 12.83 PB in the 100m freestyle, nine-year-old Jake Donnelly produced a 7.57 PB in the 50m backstroke, Alexandra Holloway,12, produced a 5.26 PB in the 100m backstroke and Jeremy Brough produced an impressive 12.43 PB in the 100m IM.

The Mandurah club’s boy and girl relay teams were winners again, securing gold, silver and bronze placings.

The outstanding relay event of the day belonged to the girls under 12s team.

The team consisting of 11-year-olds Shania Eliassen and Brittany Butler, Holloway, and anchored by Annika Jones, 12, established an early lead that was impossible to catch and that was increased with each swimmer and they won their event by a massive three-quarter pool length.

Jones was also an individual medalist, winning two gold, five silver and one bronze medal plus other strong performers included 12-year-old breastroker Kate with two gold and one bronze. Eliassen enjoyed a successful day winning seven gold medals and breaking three records, Butler also had a great day and received two gold, three silver and one bronze.

Eleven-year-olds Melissa Palmer swam very well for her silver medal, Nicole Martelli won two bronze in breastroke events, Jeremy Brough made an amazing comeback winning a well deserved gold, one silver silver and two bronze, Michael Triffett ruled the 50m fly again winning one gold and one bronze and Ben Semple enjoyed a successful meet winning one silver and one bronze.

Madison Garrett had an impressive competition despite hand problems to win two gold, one silver and one bronze, Mikaylah Jones won one gold, two silver and one bronze, Hayley Sanders took the silver in the 50m breaststroke, Natasja Reicheld overcame her nerves to win silver in the 100m IM, nine-year-old Blake Miller showed great promise with his two gold medal wins, Bailey Hollow continued his success winning two silver and one bronze, in addition to some impressive PB times Dylan Ansell won one silver and one bronze, Cameron Butler took silver in the 50m backstroke, youngster Trent Garrett won an impressive three gold, one silver and two bronze, in his first competition Charlie Burns won a silver medal, last-minute entrant Jessica Wall won one bronze and the youngest member of the team, Erik Brough, 7, won one silver and one bronze.

All club members are now gearing up for the Region 3 competition to be held middle of October at Challenge Stadium in Perth.
